Family,
WELCOME TO THE ROSE!

It's almost time for our next production, Dragons Love Tacos,
a play based on the beloved Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin.

We've assembled some special information to help you and your family to get ready for the upcoming performance.  Before you go to the show, you might want to take a few moments
to review this "Know Before You Go" Guide so everyone will know what
to expect from the performance!

The Story You Will See

When Boy has grown frustrated and overwhelmed with his math homework, his mom leaves to pick up dinner and suggests that Boy takes a break from working on it. His day becomes grayer when he opens his door to play outside with his dog Leroy it begins to storm. Leroy tries to cheer up Boy by bringing him the remote to watch some TV. After skipping past obnoxious infomercials and mushy telenovelas, Boy and Leroy suddenly come across a sharp-suited spokesperson offering mind-blowing, earth shattering, titillating dragon secrets. When the Dragonology documentary comes to life in their house, Boy and Leroy find themselves in for more than they bargained for: they come face to face with a bunch of dragons, curious creatures that enjoy tacos, parties, and taco parties! But when Boy accidentally serves the one topping Dragons cannot stand, their Dragon Taco Party gets a little out of hand. Boy and Leroy will have their work cut out for them to return their house to the way his mother left it. Will he be able to complete this task by dinnertime? And will Boy solve his difficult math homework problem before bedtime?

Know Before You Go
Here are some things your family might like to "Know Before You Go":
  • Dragons Love Tacos is based on a popular illustrated children’s book but there are some differences between the stage version and the book. Your family might enjoy discussing the differences and speculating why the playwright made certain changes in the adaptation.

  • There is quick and somewhat subtle joke referring to a time in the past when a dragon might have eaten a dog, which might upset very sensitive children.

  • The dragons in our story have a very dramatic response to food they don’t like and end up belching out very destructive fire that burns down the Boy’s house. It is all played in great silly fun—just as in the book—but some very young viewers might find the total destruction of the boy’s house to be a bit intense.
The Characters You Will Meet

    • BOY — A kid who is struggling with a very difficult math problem right before dinner and ends up discovering all about dragons and their love of tacos during a homework break.
    • LEROY, A DOG — Boy’s faithful, upbeat, and supportive canine companion who is ready for anything and tries to help Boy however he can
    • MOM — Boy’s busy but caring parent who tells Boy it might be a good idea to take a break from his math homework while she goes down the street to pick up dinner
    • MAN IN SUIT — The rather knowledgeable narrator of a 24 part documentary series about dragons that Boy and Leroy stumble across while flipping channels on the TV.
    • THE DRAGONS — large beasts who start in a documentary and end up in Boy’s House where they are united through their love for tacos and their intolerance of spicy salsa.
      • RED DRAGON — a cheerful and friendly dragon who makes herself at home
      • WHITE DRAGON — an rather energetic dragon
      • BLUE DRAGON — a somewhat overwhelmed and fearful dragon
      • YELLOW DRAGON — a silly and tricky dragon
